Minimally invasive vaginal surgery
Vaginal surgery can be commonly done for many gynecologic and pelvic floor disorders. It is minimally invasive and allows rapid healing. Avoidance of entry to the abdomen, can be beneficial particularly in patients who had prior abdominal surgeries and adhesions would be a concern. Retroperitoneal procedures such as anterior and posterior repair, sacrospinous ligament suspension and vaginal approach and slings particularly have the advantage of avoiding intra-abdominal scar tissue. Most patients can go home within 24 hours after surgery. Unfortunately, due to lack of proper training in residency programs, vaginal hysterectomy and many other vaginal approaches are less offered to patients in recent years.
